Despite an unstable economy and little population growth over the last thirty years, Pittsburgh continues to benefit from excellent hospitals, doctors and health insurance plans which make them accessible to local residents.

Of all the insurance carriers operating locally, three deserve special mention:

• Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western Pennsylvania – Offering both medically underwritten and guaranteed issue plans, this carrier offers a wealth of options and access to every hospital in western Pennsylvania.
• Health America – Another high quality company with a variety of plan, Health America covers preventative services with no deductible for all of its individual plans. These services include routine physical examinations, mammograms, pap smears and annual visits to a gynecologist.
• Aetna – A nationally recognized health insurance provider Aetna serves the western Pennsylvania market with a variety of options, from high deductible, low cost plans to high level coverage HMOs.
